October is National Principals Month. During this month we recognize the dedicated leaders who guide our schools and support students, staff and families every day. To celebrate, we did a Q&A with a few principals around the county to learn more about what inspires them and the impact their role can play in the community. Each principal answered the same set of questions, giving us a glimpse into their leadership, their passions and even a few fun facts along the way.

How long have you been with MCPS?

I have worked for MCPS since 1994 — 31 years! I began my career as a 2nd grade teacher at Viers Mill Elementary School.

How long have you been the principal at Page ES?

This is my 11th year serving as the proud principal of William Tyler Page Elementary School.

What inspires you each day?

I am inspired each day by being a part of the Page Community. Our students are proud to be Page Penguins and strive to reflect our core values — being Responsible, Respectful and Ready to Learn — while always showing their Penguin P.R.I.D.E. through Partnership, Rigor, Integrity, Determination and Equity. Seeing their growth, enthusiasm and commitment motivates me to ensure our school remains a place where every student feels valued and empowered to succeed.

What advice would you give to a first-year principal?

My advice is to start each day by being visible — walk the building, help out at the car loop and greet students as they arrive and leave. Take time to truly listen and observe the school environment before making decisions. As a first-year principal, I hung charts outside my office asking staff three questions: What do you enjoy about Page? What do you want to keep? What is something you want to change? I also asked the same questions to families during meet-and-greets. Their feedback was invaluable in shaping my leadership and building a strong, collaborative school community.

What’s your top win/biggest accomplishment from this past year?

Being recognized as a 4-Star school is my proudest accomplishment from this past year! This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, and families. It also shows the impact of building a strong, caring school community focused on high expectations, academic growth and student well-being.

What job did you want to have when you were a kid?

When I was a kid, I dreamed of becoming a doctor or working in sports medicine.

What’s an interesting/fun fact that not everyone knows about you?

I’ve read all the Harry Potter books and watched every movie, and I’m also a huge fan of Marvel and James Bond 007 movies.

What impact do you think principals have on the greater community?

I believe that principals play a vital role in building a strong sense of community and trust by creating welcoming, inclusive schools where students, families and staff feel valued and connected. I try to ensure these things at Page ES by fostering a nurturing environment focused on learning, caring and growth.
