County Investments Have Strengthened Wheaton as a Place for Arts, Cultural Programming, Small Businesses, and Community Events
Montgomery County’s Wheaton Arts & Entertainment District has been redesignated by the Maryland Department of Commerce for an additional 10 years, allowing residents, artists, and businesses to continue benefiting from State support for arts, culture, and economic development.
The redesignation takes effect July 1 and remains in effect through 2036. It allows the district to continue participating in Maryland’s Arts & Entertainment District program while building on recent County investments that have helped strengthen Wheaton as a destination for arts, cultural programming, small businesses, and community events.
First designated in 2006, the Wheaton Arts & Entertainment District has grown into a hub for arts, culture, and small businesses. Today, visitors can enjoy concerts and cultural festivals at Marian Fryer Town Plaza, artist-run businesses, traditional arts programming, public art installations, and restaurants representing cultures from around the world.
“This redesignation is recognition of the artists, small businesses, and community organizations that have helped make Wheaton a vibrant cultural center for Montgomery County,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “The arts bring people together, strengthen local businesses, and create a stronger sense of community. We look forward to building on that success through continued investments, including the future Wheaton Arts & Cultural Center.”
The district includes dozens of arts organizations, creative enterprises, public artworks, performance venues, and cultural attractions. Signature events such as HalloWheaton, Taste of Wheaton, the Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival, the TGIF Summer Concert Series, and numerous cultural heritage celebrations draw residents and visitors year-round.
“The redesignation of the Wheaton Arts & Entertainment District is a testament to the creativity and diversity that define our community. We are proud of the longstanding artists, cultural organizations, and signature community events that have helped shape Wheaton into one of the most culturally rich destinations in Montgomery County,” said County Council President Natali Fani-González, who lives in Wheaton. “As we move forward with the development of the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, this redesignation strengthens our efforts to invest in the arts as a catalyst for community building, cultural expression, and economic vitality in Wheaton.”
The redesignation builds on Montgomery County’s ongoing investment in Wheaton, including the Marian Fryer Town Plaza, the Wheaton Library and Recreation Center, and the planned Wheaton Arts & Cultural Center. Together, these projects support opportunities for residents and visitors to experience arts, culture, and community activities in the heart of Wheaton.
