Vice President Stewart to Host Reproductive Rights Press Conference on Sept. 10

For Immediate Release: Thursday, September 5, 2024

Council will vote on a resolution affirming Montgomery County’s commitment to protect reproductive rights on Tuesday

Montgomery County Council Vice President Kate Stewart will be joined by County Executive Marc Elrich, Councilmembers, public officials and reproductive rights leaders for a press conference to reaffirm Montgomery County’s commitment to protect reproductive rights on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 12:15 p.m. in Rockville.

The Council is expected to vote on a resolution reaffirming Montgomery County’s commitment to support the preservation of abortion rights during the Council session on Tuesday morning. The resolution comes in response to increased restrictions, legal barriers to care and criminalization of abortion seekers and providers nationwide following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

Spearheaded by Vice President Stewart, the resolution recommends that County agencies coordinate to protect people or entities providing, assisting, seeking, or obtaining reproductive health services. Additionally, the resolution supports a Maryland constitutional amendment to protect the right to reproductive freedom, which will appear on the ballot this November. The resolution is cosponsored by all Councilmembers.

Who: Vice President Stewart, County Executive Marc Elrich, Councilmembers, Executive Director of the Maryland Commission for Women Ariana Kelly, County officials, providers, and individuals with personal stories.
