The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a virtual public hearing (online only) at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, to discuss the proposed sidewalk installations, under the Purple Line Bicycle and Pedestrian Priority Area (BiPPA) sidewalk proposal, for the Manchester Place station. The public will have an opportunity to provide oral testimony and ask questions.
At the public hearing, MCDOT will present the revised project concept plans, details, costs, and schedule. MCDOT will also obtain public testimony regarding the proposed installations and answer questions. Public input is encouraged and may influence the final decision.
Online registration is required to attend. After registering, the Zoom platform will send attendees an email containing the Zoom link and passcode needed to attend the virtual hearing.
The Purple Line BiPPA sidewalk proposal for the Manchester Place station proposes the installation of 5-foot-wide, ADA-compliant sidewalks and ADA curb ramps on roadways within a half and quarter mile of the new station in Silver Spring. The new sidewalks and curb ramps will allow Purple Line users to be more connected to communities throughout Montgomery County and the DC area by enhancing cycling and walking facilities, while emphasizing safety and accessibility.
MCDOT proposes the installation of a 5-foot-wide concrete sidewalk on the following County roads within a half mile of the new station:
- The west side of Saybrook Avenue from Melbourne Avenue to Hamilton Avenue.
- The west side of Wire Avenue from Melbourne Avenue to Revere Place.
- The north side of Melbourne Avenue from 121 Melbourne Avenue to Flower Avenue.
- The west side of Providence Avenue from Melbourne Avenue to 9018 Providence Avenue.
- The north side of Oldham Road from Lauder Terrace to Providence Avenue.
- The north side of East Schuyler Road from Eton Road to Flower Avenue.
- The east side of Eton Road from East Schuyler Road to Melbourne Avenue.
- The east side of Eton Road from East Schuyler Road to East Wayne Avenue.
- The east side of Geren Road from Manchester Road to Hartwell Road.
- The west side of Reading Road from Plymouth Street to Manchester Road.
- The east side of Bradford Road from Schuyler Road to Wayne Avenue.
- The west side of Plymouth Street from 8710 to 8802 Plymouth Street.
- The east side of Plymouth Street from 8705 Plymouth Street to Hartwell Road.
- The south side of Plymouth Street from Reading Road to 8809 Plymouth Street.
In addition to new sidewalks, MCDOT will also add crosswalks, curb ramps, and other pedestrian amenities to make it easier for residents to navigate the area around the new Purple Line stations. By enhancing sidewalk connectivity, MCDOT is making it more convenient for people to choose walking as a mode of transportation, which has numerous health and environmental benefits. Overall, the sidewalk connectivity enhancements by MCDOT near the new Purple Line stations are a positive step towards creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment in Montgomery County. These improvements not only improve access to public transportation but also promote walkability and sustainability in the community.
The public is encouraged to visit the project website and provide feedback via the online testimony form or by email to Planning Specialist Lori Main at Lori.Main@montgomerycountymd.gov by Monday, August 31. Written testimony carries the same weight as oral testimony. All information provided will become a matter of public record.
