The Montgomery County Office of Human Rights, in collaboration with the Montgomery County Human Rights Commission, will host a free virtual Fair Housing Seminar for housing industry professionals from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 30.
April is Fair Housing Month, a time to recognize progress in expanding equal housing opportunities and to raise awareness about ongoing discriminatory practices.
“Fair housing is about making sure everyone has a real opportunity to live where they choose without facing discrimination,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “We’ve made progress, but there is still work to do. This seminar helps ensure that housing providers and advocates understand their responsibilities and that residents know their rights.”
The seminar is open to realtors, property managers, landlords, housing providers, human service professionals, condominium and homeowner association representatives, advocates, and others interested in housing issues.
Topics will include disability accommodations, source-of-income protections, service and emotional support animals, and “Ban the Box” requirements. Presenters will include County staff, representatives from State regulatory agencies, fair housing advocates, the National Fair Housing Alliance, the Equal Rights Center, and the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights. Updates on current federal, state, and County laws and regulations also will be provided.
Participants must register through the Zoom website to receive the link to the virtual seminar.
Residents who need sign language interpretation or other auxiliary aids or services to participate should contact Anis Ahmed at 240-777-8454 or by email. Requests should be made as soon as possible.
