Free Event Will Bring Together Local Community Leaders, Health Experts, and Families to Promote Health Equity and Wellness
Montgomery County’s African American Health Program (AAHP) will host its 12th annual Community Day on Saturday, May 30. The free event will be held at the Montgomery College Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, in the Charlene N. Nunley Student Services Center, located at 7600 Takoma Ave. in Takoma Park.
The family-friendly event features the theme, “It Takes a Village: Educate, Advocate, and Motivate.” Community Day activities are designed to increase awareness, prevention, early detection, and access to resources for chronic health conditions that disproportionately impact African American communities.
“Health disparities do not happen by accident, and they are not solved by accident either,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “They reflect long-standing inequities in access to care, nutrition, housing, transportation, education, and economic opportunity. Programs like the African American Health Program matter because they meet people where they are, build trust in the community, and connect residents with information and services that can improve and extend lives. I appreciate the employees of the Department of Health and Human Services for these persistent efforts and encourage residents to come out and take advantage of the resources available.”
A pre-event community walk will begin at 8 a.m. Doors open at 9 a.m., and the event will end at 2 p.m.
Event highlights include:
- Health and wellness exhibits, free health screenings, and educational workshops.
- A voter education fair and live local podcasts.
- A live DJ, giveaways, a line dancing jam, a digital photobooth, and face painting.
- A youth zone with interactive programming for children and teens ages 5-17.
- Complimentary food, beverages, and swag bags while supplies last.
Free parking will be available at the Montgomery College East Garage, located at 7726 Fenton St. in Takoma Park. The venue also is accessible via WMATA bus service and the Metro Red Line through the Takoma or Silver Spring stations.
Advance registration is required for all attendees, including children and youth. Residents may register through the AAHP Community Day website or the EventBrite registration page.
