ROCKVILLE, Md., May 11, 2026—The Montgomery County Council will commemorate Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month on Tuesday, May 12 at 11:30 a.m. Recognized nationally throughout the month of May, AANHPI Heritage Month acknowledges the roles that Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders have played in our history and celebrates their ongoing achievements and contributions.
“This Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we celebrate the richness of cultures and perspectives that make our communities stronger,” said Council President Natali Fani-González. “We’re proud to recognize local leaders across fields whose talent, resilience and dedication continue to inspire and uplift our communities and make them more vibrant and innovative for all.”
“The AANHPI community is one of our county’s largest and fastest-growing groups, representing a rich diversity of cultures, religions, languages, and experiences. But as with other marginalized groups, our stories and accomplishments have historically been excluded and erased from the narrative. As the daughter of a Chinese immigrant, and the first Asian American to sit on the County Council, I am proud that here in Montgomery County, we are working proactively to change that,” said Councilmember Kristin Mink. “This month, as we lift up contributions AANHPI residents are making to science, arts and entrepreneurship, we also make clear that regardless of federal climate, Montgomery County recognizes the tremendous value of welcoming people from every part of the world.”
This year’s theme is “A Legacy of Leadership and Resilience.” The commemoration will include a video documenting Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders making a difference in our communities through science, arts and entrepreneurship. This year’s commemoration will recognize Rose Li, founder of Rose Li & Associates, Inc., Dr. Samia Mahbub Ahmad, a Hindustani classical vocal musician, and Mika Shino, founder and CEO of Issei Mochi Gummies.
The Council commemoration will be streaming live on the Council’s Facebook page, YouTube channel and Council website. Residents also will be able to watch live on television on Comcast/RCN channels 996/1056 Verizon channel 30.
