The latest episode of Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services’ (ABS) “Spirited Discussions” podcast explores how public, private, and non-profit partnerships are helping expand Montgomery County’s wine industry, agricultural tourism, and opportunities for local winemakers.
The episode, “Growing Montgomery County Wine Country,” features ABS Assistant Store Manager Angie Alvarez and Montgomery County Revenue Authority (MCRA) CEO Keith Miller. Joined by podcast host Jocelyn Rawat, the guests discuss ABS’ local products program and MCRA’s The Crossvines winery and production facility.
The conversation highlights shared winemaking opportunities, research, and education partnerships, and the alcohol distribution regulations that affect small local brands.
Located in Poolesville, The Crossvines is an agricultural, dining, and event destination that includes a working winery, contemporary bistro, and public golf course. The facility also features a wine production facility and crush space for independent winemakers, along with an educational winemaking program in partnership with the University of Maryland. MCRA operates The Crossvines at no cost to taxpayers.

“Montgomery County is known for its urban centers, world-class shopping, outstanding restaurants, and diverse cultural opportunities,” said Rawat. “But the Agricultural Reserve is also home to a growing wine country. The quality and variety of local products continue to expand, and ABS remains committed to supporting the success of local manufacturers.”
ABS sells wines produced at The Crossvines and by participating wineries that use the production facility. In 2025, the ABS local products program featured 39 local suppliers and generated $2.15 million in revenue.
The “Spirited Discussions” podcast provides residents and businesses with information about beverage alcohol products, industry trends, and policies in Montgomery County. Episodes are available on the ABS website and major podcast platforms, including Amazon, Apple, and Spotify.

ABS serves as the alcohol wholesaler for beer, wine, and spirits in Montgomery County and operates 27 retail stores throughout the County. ABS also manages alcohol licensing, enforcement, and education for more than 1,000 businesses.
The department generates tens of millions in annual net income. Those funds help pay down County debt, with a significant portion deposited into the County’s General Fund to support programs and services that otherwise would need to be funded through tax dollars.
