Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal hit and run collision that occurred on Friday, June 19, 2026, in Silver Spring. The collision resulted in the death of 61-year-old Hanna Wegayehou of Silver Spring.
Detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the vehicle involved.
At approximately 1:14 p.m., 3rd District officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the intersection of Crestmoor Drive and Colesville Road for the report of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.
The investigation revealed that Wegayehou was struck by a vehicle while crossing Crestmoor Drive. The driver of the striking vehicle failed to remain at the scene.
Despite life-saving efforts, Wegayehou was pronounced dead at the scene.
The vehicle believed to be involved is described as a black SUV with tinted windows and possible front-end or right-front damage. The vehicle was last seen at approximately 1:17 p.m., heading north on Colesville Road towards New Hampshire Avenue.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is investigating this fatal hit and run collision and is asking anyone with information to call the Montgomery County Police Non-Emergency (301)279-8000 (24-hour line).
