Traffic Stop Results in Drug and Gun Seizure

Gaithersburg, MD – 78-year-old James Curtis Avant, of Bowie, and 29-year-old D’Andre Michael Wiggins, of Germantown, have been arrested and charged with multiple drug and handgun-related offenses following a traffic stop conducted by the Montgomery County Department of Police 6th District Community Action Team on Monday, March 9, 2026.

At approximately 7 p.m., officers were conducting proactive enforcement in the area of Lost Knife Circle when they observed suspicious activity involving a vehicle parked near a laundromat. A passenger got out of the vehicle carrying a satchel, walked toward a nearby transit center, and returned to the vehicle shortly afterward.

Officers later observed a traffic violation on Midcounty Highway and conducted a traffic stop in the 17500 block of Towncrest Drive.

During the stop, officers conducted a search of the vehicle and recovered controlled dangerous substances and a firearm.

Avant and Wiggins were arrested and transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where Avant was charged with drug-related offenses and Wiggins was charged with drug and weapon-related offenses.
