On Thursday, July 2, starting at 12:30 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) implemented an emergency closure of the Newcut Road bridge, from Houser Drive to MD355 in Clarksburg.
The bridge project, which spans over Little Seneca Creek, is scheduled to take approximately ten days to complete, weather and operational conditions permitting.
The bridge will be closed to all traffic throughout the duration of the bridge abutment restoration. A detour map is available to assist drivers in identifying alternate routes.
During the project, engineers will address a large void behind the bridge abutment and evidence of undermining of the abutment.
The project includes milling, paving, and resurfacing operations designed to extend the lifespan of the bridge and ensure a safer and smoother travel experience for residents and commuters in the Clarksburg area.
“We routinely inspect bridges throughout Montgomery County to make sure they remain in serviceable condition. Our inspection of Newcut Road identified repairs that are needed to keep the bridge safe to use, so we are closing the road to repair the bridge abutments and approaches,” said Chris Conklin, Director of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation. “We recognize the inconvenience caused by a road closure and will complete the work as quickly as we can.”
Questions and comments about the upcoming construction can be sent to Brian E. Copley, P.E., Bridge Section Chief, at Brian.Copley@montgomerycountymd.gov or 240-777-7227.
