Montgomery County Public Libraries to Temporarily Close Noyes Library for Young Children for Renovations Beginning Thursday, May 21 – Mocofeed

Posted on May 9, 2026

Branch to Undergo Comprehensive Renovation; Reopening Expected Fall 2027

The Noyes Library for Young Children, located at 10237 Carroll Place in Kensington, will temporarily close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, for a comprehensive renovation. The facility is expected to remain closed for approximately 14 to 16 months, with reopening anticipated in fall 2027. Ahead of the closure, a community groundbreaking will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, at the site.

The Noyes Library is a small, historically designated library dedicated to pre-kindergarten and early literacy education. Its intimate scale creates a signature experience for young children, but the building is not fully accessible and lacks dedicated staff and programming spaces.

“Noyes has always been a special place for young children and their families,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “But the building hasn’t kept up with what people need today. If we want early learning spaces to work for everyone, they have to be accessible, functional, and able to support the kind of programming our libraries are known for. This renovation fixes those gaps while keeping what makes Noyes unique. When it reopens, it will work a lot better for the families and staff who rely on it every day.”

The project will deliver a comprehensive rehabilitation and enhancement of the historic facility while preserving its unique, small-scale character. Planned improvements will:

  • Ensure the facility is fully accessible for all patrons and staff.
  • Provide new ADA-compliant restrooms for public and staff use.
  • Create dedicated space for library staff to prepare and deliver programming.

The scope of work includes converting the attic into a finished second floor with staff workspace, renovating the original first-floor library room, creating a finished basement to hold a programming room and restrooms, and installing an elevator to provide universal access.

Noyes Library is no longer available as a pickup location for new holds, so customers should choose another library as their pickup location. Customers with existing holds at Noyes may pick them up through Tuesday, May 12.

During the closure, customers are encouraged to visit nearby branches for continued service. Kensington Park Library, the closest branch to Noyes, offers access to collections, programs, and resources. Customers also can use the library system’s digital offerings, including e-books, audiobooks, and virtual programs.
