Every student. Every classroom. Every day. That’s the message as MCPS takes a closer look at student academic performance and strengthens the instruction and support students receive in classrooms.
On Thursday, Oct. 22, the Montgomery County Board of Education heard a first-quarter update on student academic performance for the 2026–2027 school year. The presentation examined early results in reading and mathematics, identified areas of progress and challenges, and outlined how MCPS is using that information to improve teaching and learning across the district.
Fall assessments provided an important starting point for measuring student achievement and monitoring progress throughout the school year.
The highlights:
- Early literacy: More than 61% of students in kindergarten through Grade 3 met the fall reading benchmark. First- and second-grade results improved slightly compared with fall 2025.
- Middle school reading: Eighth-grade reading results showed stronger performance than seventh-grade results across student groups, pointing to encouraging patterns in secondary literacy.
- Elementary mathematics: Nearly 52% of students in kindergarten through Grade 5 met the fall mathematics benchmark, with fourth- and fifth-grade students demonstrating the strongest performance.
- Middle school mathematics: The percentage of students meeting mathematics benchmarks was higher in each successive grade, from 27.7% in Grade 6 to 51.2% in Grade 8.
The results also underscored areas where improvement is needed. MCPS is using this early data to identify challenges, strengthen instruction and provide targeted support to help more students succeed.
Staff reported that the district’s approach includes:
- Stronger classroom instruction: Helping teachers deliver high-quality lessons that challenge students to think critically, solve problems, read, write and explain their thinking.
- Additional help when students need it: Providing focused instructional time, small-group interventions and individualized support for students who need extra assistance.
- More support for teachers: Expanding instructional coaching, professional learning and collaboration so educators have the tools and resources to meet student needs.
- Closer monitoring of progress: Using assessments, classroom observations and school support teams to identify what is working and adjustments where needed.
Another important part of the district’s work is making sure families have meaningful information about how their children are doing academically.
MCPS will be sharing regular updates with families about student academic performance. These include student progress reports available through Synergy, assessment results and additional notifications when students may need extra academic support.
We encourage parents and caregivers to stay connected with teachers, review their child’s progress, read together, practice essential skills at home and ask questions about how they can support learning. Even small, everyday efforts can make a big difference.
This effort is directly connected to the district’s MCPS Future Ready Strategic Plan and its commitment to academic excellence and preparing students for success beyond graduation.
