Gaithersburg, MD – A 16-year-old Walt Whitman High School student is in custody and facing weapons charges after bringing a loaded handgun onto school property.
On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at approximately 12:12 p.m., Montgomery County Department of Police Community Engagement Officers were dispatched to Westfield Montgomery Mall for a report of an altercation involving a group of teenagers from two separate high schools.
During the altercation, one of the teens allegedly displayed a handgun to the individuals in the other group.
As a result of the on-scene investigation, officers identified the person with the gun as a Walt Whitman High School student. Officers then contacted the school’s principal and security staff.
School security located the student and Andre Wilson of Bethesda was removed from class and escorted to a secure room. Wilson was separated from his belongings, and a search revealed a loaded 9mm Ruger handgun with an obliterated serial number in his backpack, along with a magazine.
Wilson was taken into custody by Montgomery County Police.
He is charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on school property, possession of a firearm by a minor, illegal possession of ammunition, carrying a handgun on person, possession of firearm with serial number obliterated, illegal possession of a regulated firearm and loaded handgun on person.
Andre Wilson is charged as an adult and is being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.
