The Montgomery County Commission for Women will host “Virtual Career Exploration for Her,” a free, interactive career exploration event for all middle school, high school, and college-aged students, from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
Through an engaging panel discussion, students will hear directly from professional women who will share their educational backgrounds, career journeys, professional experiences and advice for pursuing careers in their respective fields. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the skills, education, and experience needed to succeed in these professions.
Featured panelists include:
• Dorcus (Dee) W. Howard Richards, division chief, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.
• Kate Salvador, a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy.
• Laura Lago-Garrido, director of architecture, ZDS Architecture & Interiors.
Women continue to face barriers to equal representation and advancement in many industries. In Maryland, women earn approximately 87 cents for every dollar earned by men, with even greater wage disparities experienced by many women of color. By introducing students to a broader range of career opportunities and connecting them with women who have successfully pursued careers in traditionally male-dominated fields, the Commission hopes to encourage young women to explore new possibilities, challenge gender stereotypes, and confidently pursue their professional goals.
The event is free and will be held virtually via Zoom, but advance registration is required. Registration is available at https://bit.ly/4y1Eeix.
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students who participate in the event and complete a brief survey at its conclusion are eligible to earn two Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.
