Flood & Emergency Preparation Tips
September is National Preparedness Month and a good opportunity to review emergency preparation tips for floods and weather-related dangers. Floods are one of the most dangerous hazards and occur throughout the United States. During a flood, homes, businesses, and entire neighborhoods can become inundated with water. Causes range from: severe storms such as hurricanes, toppled levees, outdated or clogged drainage systems, proximity to a body of water, residing in a location in which water flows downstream or being at a lower elevation, or from the rapid accumulation of sudden rainfall.
Consider Keeping These Flood and Emergency Preparation Tips in Mind:
- Make a family emergency plan and become familiar with local resources in case a flood emergency is issued.
- Remember resources such as the FEMA Shelter and Disaster Recovery Center locator where those affected can text SHELTER plus their zip code to 43362.
- Safeguard important documents ahead of time, inventory major purchases from your home, have valuables appraised, and make sure your insurance coverage is updated.
- Assemble an Emergency/Disaster Supply Kit with items such as a battery-powered radio, a first aid kit, extra flashlights, batteries, blankets, matches or lighters in a sealed plastic bag, cash, and enough water, food, pet food, infant formula, toiletries, prescription medications, and clothing, for at least 72 hours for each family member.
The City of Rockville provides Emergency Preparedness tips and offers an official emergency communications system, Alert Rockville, where members of the community can sign up for notifications concerning emergencies, severe weather, unexpected road closures, and other public safety incidents. In addition, the American Red Cross provides information about emergency shelters and safety preparation, as well as clean up and recovery tips following a disaster.
