Students at Wyngate Elementary School wrapped up an exciting season of Book Battles, an optional reading program that combined teamwork, friendly competition and a love of books.

Twenty-nine students participated in the program, forming eight teams that met with teacher volunteers throughout the spring to discuss chapter books and prepare for Kahoot-style quiz competitions. The program culminated in a championship round during a school assembly, where the top two teams faced off to test their knowledge of the books they had read.

The program was led by reading specialist Laura Oldroyd and media specialist Erin Bhanot.

“Book Battles is a great opportunity to encourage reading with our older students and strengthen their love of reading through teamwork and friendly competition,” said Oldroyd. “As students read throughout the program, they prepare to face off in an engaging final ‘battle’ where they showcase their knowledge, critical thinking and collaboration skills by answering questions about the books.”

The winning team, Brain the Axolotl, included students Alex, Zachary and Amelia.

Fifth grade student Oliver said the experience made reading even more enjoyable.

“Doing Book Battles was fun,” Oliver said. “I liked meeting with my group and answering questions about the books we read. Our team even made a theme song.”
