Hot Weather & Excessive Heat Safety Tips

Summer vacations and more hours of daylight can mean that we spend more time outside. For those, who work outdoors or have limited access to air conditioning indoors, excessive heat and sweltering temperatures can be not only uncomfortable, but dangerous for health.

Keep These Hot Weather Safety Tips in Mind This Summer:

• Drink plenty of water regularly throughout the day, and limit beverages with caffeine, alcohol, or excessive sugar. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty – keep well hydrated.
• Plan exercise and activities requiring excessive physical exertion for the early morning or late evening, if possible.
• Avoid spending long periods of time in direct sunlight and take frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioning.
• Wear lightweight, comfortable, light-colored clothing, sunglasses, and hats.
• Apply sunscreen before going outside and reapply it throughout the day.
• Never leave children or pets in a car, even with the windows cracked.
• Check on elderly neighbors or relatives regularly and be mindful of signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
• Those with chronic health conditions, young children and infants, those who are pregnant, and pets are also particularly vulnerable to excessive heat.
• If you don’t have access to air conditioning, consider spending time in other places such as public libraries, indoor public pools, shopping malls, or cooling centers.
• Utilize other methods for keeping cool, which can include ceiling fans, cold showers or baths, cool compresses using wet towels, and drinking cold beverages.
• Learn the Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion such as dehydration, headache, and muscle weakness, and Heat Stroke such as vomiting, convulsions, delirium, and increased body temperature, and Seek Medical Attention if you or someone you encounter exhibits any of these dangerous symptoms.

The City of Rockville makes several if its facilities available to those, who need a place to rest and cool off when the heat becomes excessive.

• 800 Blk. Hungerford Drive, an unknown subject claimed to be law enforcement and contacted the victim with instructions to deposit funds into an unknown Bitcoin account to avoid being arrested for fictitious outstanding citations on 6/17/26 between 2:40 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

• 200 Blk. N. Washington Street, a known subject assaulted the victim after an argument escalated at 7:55 p.m. on 6/19/26. The victim was referred for charges and obtaining a protective order.

• 700 Blk. Monroe Street, an unknown subject offered to purchase stocks in exchange for the victim sending Apple gift cards between 5/31/26 and 6/20/26.
• 12500 Blk. Ardennes Avenue, a known subject assaulted the victim after an argument escalated and fled with the victim’s personal property. The victim was referred for charges.
