Teen Killed in Long Branch Park Shooting; Two Suspects in Custody

For Immediate Release: Sunday, September 7, 2025

Gaithersburg, MD – A 17-year-old was killed and another remains hospitalized after a shooting Friday night in Long Branch Local Park. Two suspects are now in custody and face multiple charges.

On Friday, Sept. 5, at approximately 9:46 p.m., the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from a person stating that he had been shot, along with additional calls reporting the sound of gunfire in the area of 711 Langley Drive.

Montgomery County Department of Police 3rd District officers and Maryland-National Capital Park Police responded and located two males in the park suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims, a 17-year-old, was transported to an area hospital and remains in critical condition. The second victim, identified as 17-year-old Charly Blayner Vail Lucas of Silver Spring, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division – Homicide Section responded and based on evidence at the scene, determined that the shooting was possibly connected to a homicide on Tuesday, Aug. 19, when 17-year-old Jaril Verde Murillo was shot and killed on University Boulevard East.

While the Long Branch location was being processed, Major Crimes detectives were executing a search warrant at the Silver Spring residence of 20-year-old Jhony Steve Rosales Castillo on 11th Avenue. The warrant, executed with the assistance of SWAT on Saturday, Sept. 6, led to the arrest of Rosales Castillo and 18-year-old Juan Carlos Gutierrez-Hernandez. Firearms and additional evidence linking the suspects to both homicides were recovered inside the residence.

Both Rosales Castillo and Gutierrez-Hernandez were transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where they have been charged with two counts of first-degree murder of a minor victim, one count of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of possession of a firearm under the age of 21. They are being held pending a bond hearing scheduled for Monday, Sept. 8.
