Take Action in April to Celebrate Earth Month with the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection

Join the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) throughout April to celebrate Earth Month, with special events promoting sustainability, conservation and eco-friendly action. Highlights include the two-day Montgomery County Energy Summit (April 8-9), Tree Montgomery’s 10th Anniversary, the 10th Annual GreenFest and Climate Conversations at County libraries.
“Earth Month is a great time to remember how important it is to take care of our planet,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “This month, and all year long, I encourage everyone to make more sustainable choices and get involved in the activities offered by our County’s Department of Environmental Protection. We only have one Earth, so let’s do our part to protect it.”
DEP will host events, activities, announcements and celebrations designed to inspire action, promote sustainability and encourage environmental stewardship, including:
- Montgomery County Energy Summit : Tuesday, April 8, and Wednesday, April 9 at the Silver Spring Civic Center, located at 1 Veterans Place in Silver Spring. The 12th annual Summit will feature educational sessions, hands-on workshops and personalized resources designed to help building professionals move beyond basic energy benchmarking.
- Food Scraps Recycling : Sunday, April 13 at the Bethesda Central Farm Market , located at 7600 Arlington Road in Bethesda. DEP will highlight the Food Scraps Recycling Program during Food Waste Prevention Week (April 7-13).
- Climate Conversations at County libraries: DEP and other County departments will provide information, giveaways and show County residents how to be Climate Smart. Visit the DEP calendar for more information.
- GreenFest : Saturday, April 26. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Marian Fryer Town Plaza , located at 2424 Reedie Dr. in Wheaton. DEP will celebrate the 10th annual GreenFest (the County’s largest environmental festival).
- Curbside Electronic Battery Collection Expansion: DEP will announce the expansion of its single-family residential curbside recycling program to include the on-call collection of electronic items and household batteries.
- Tree Montgomery 10th Anniversary Celebration: Friday, April 25. DEP will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Tree Montgomery program , with 18,400 trees planted throughout the County.
“Everyone has a role to play in protecting our air, water and land,” said DEP Director Jon Monger. “DEP’s mission is to build a more sustainable economy and healthier communities. But we can’t do it alone—our success relies on residents and businesses taking action to preserve the environment. Earth Month is a reminder of how crucial it is to take action year-round to protect our planet. I hope you’ll join us this April as we celebrate and take steps toward a brighter future.”
