Statement from Council President Kate Stewart on Mass Layoffs at Federal Health Agencies – MocoFeed

Posted on April 1, 2025

“Our federal workforce is experiencing unprecedented upheaval and ongoing threats due to the current administration’s irresponsible decisions and frankly cruel actions. The reckless mass cuts to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Federal Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health’s labor forces are an assault on science and will have dangerous long-term ramifications for Montgomery County and our nation.

“The Trump administration’s abrupt decision to cut over 10,000 employees across health and human services, including 3,500 jobs from the Federal Drug Administration, is a dramatic blow to our nation’s most critical departments and directly impacts hundreds of Montgomery County residents and their families. These are health professionals who have dedicated their lives to public service. They are the experts who lead public health research on cancer, infant and maternal health, who track and develop life saving vaccines and medications, and help prevent the spread of infectious diseases. They are experts responsible for assuring the safety of our nation’s food supply, medications, and medical devices that residents rely on everyday.

This would be improved by using the correct name of one of the agencies. It is the Food and Drug Administration, not the Federal Drug Administration. Maybe there is someone in your office who can proofread these before they are posted in the future.

I agree with your statement 100%. As a private citizen I am feeling helpless as there is no avenue for citizens to effect changes to this assault on our government workers and the necessary services they provide to the citizenry.

They make those crucial institutes which are essential for public health and essential for cutting edge science to cure cancer, neuro degenerative and infectious diseases, look like they are waste of money. It is unbelievable how ignorant America became to believe those lies. Very concerned about the future of our children.

    Dear President Stewart,

As a Country resident, I’m saddened by this release. This serves, at best, as little more than an official complaint and, worst, a stump speech. Neither of which is valuable to the County residents at this time. I would strongly recommend you personally reread this press release. In the three main paragraphs you do little more than complain or make statements which are either derisive toward the current administration or glad-handing toward county residents who match a certain cohort. It is not until the last paragraph, the last line that you offer help.
We’ve had enough of the hate spewing and self-righteousness on either side. If you are going to help, please do so without the unnecessary commentary. You are in office to LEAD not lecture.
