Public Meeting on the Norfolk Avenue Facility Planning Study to be Held on Wednesday, Sept. 20 – MocoFeed

Public Meeting on the Norfolk Avenue Facility Planning Study to be Held on Wednesday, Sept. 20

For Immediate Release: Friday, September 8, 2023

On Wednesday, Sept. 20, starting at 6:30 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold an in-person public meeting at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center, Wisconsin Room, located at 4805 Edgemoor Lane in Bethesda to discuss and gather community feedback on possible long-term improvements to the Norfolk Ave. Streetery area.

This meeting will allow MCDOT to share the recommended alternative for the long-term future of Norfolk Avenue. The current design is still very preliminary and is at the concept stage. The ultimate goal of the effort is to find ways to support a permanent streetery along Norfolk Avenue and improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety in the corridor.

This design will not replace the current BUP maintained Streetery, but rather will enhance it with long-term physical infrastructure improvements such as raising the Streetery surface to the same elevation as the sidewalk, adding raised intersections to slow cross traffic, adding stormwater management through green infrastructure, and in the areas where the Streetery isn’t present, the addition of a two-way cycletrack.

MCDOT is exploring options to enhance the streetscape and the existing streetery while permitting the safe movement of pedestrians and bicyclists through the space, loading and unloading needs for local businesses, as well as considerations for vehicular traffic.

At the in-person public meeting, MCDOT will present the recommended alternative for Norfolk Ave. and gather feedback. The recommended alternative was developed based on feedback received at the first community meeting in March 2023, outreach to businesses along the corridor, and from community feedback collected at multiple events over the past year.

Feedback and questions may be submitted to Matt Johnson by email at . All information provided, including names and comments will become a matter of public record.

Prior to the meeting, the public is encouraged to review the proposal files on the project website here . Materials are expected to be posted at least 24 hours before the meeting.
