The Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services (DPS) has released a new podcast episode, “Planning a Successful Renovation,” to help homeowners plan and prepare for a successful home renovation. The podcast is hosted by DPS Customer Support and Outreach Division Chief Gail Lucas, and this episode features DPS Residential Plan Reviewer William DeGrouchy.
“Planning a renovation can be exciting and overwhelming,” said DPS Division Chief Lucas. “This episode will guide homeowners through the various steps of the permitting process, so they know what to expect and how our staff at DPS can help them prepare.”
The episode covers:
- The importance of pre-planning and the free DPS predesign virtual consultation.
- What to know about zoning and setbacks, and why to check at the beginning of a renovation project.
- New demolition rules.
- What to know about the energy code.
- Why hiring a licensed contractor is key.
- When you may not need a permit.
- What to know about inspections.
“Montgomery County is the best in the DMV,” said DeGrouchy, who has worked at DPS for more than 20 years. “And the reason I say that is to see the effort all our staff make every day. We are transparent and always go the extra mile with homeowners in our efforts.”
During the podcast, he also touts the DPS pre-engineered deck packet, which he describes as an installation manual, as he explains how it simplifies the permitting process for decks by allowing homeowners to come in with just a site plan.
The DPS Podcast is part of the department’s ongoing commitment to provide residents with accessible, easy-to-understand information that supports safe construction practices and streamlines the permitting process. Previous episodes have addressed topics including accessory dwelling units, eSolar, updated building codes, residential fast-track permits, special event permits, use and occupancy certificates, and vendor licensing.
Residents can subscribe to the podcast through major podcast platforms, including Amazon Music, Apple, and Spotify, or watch episodes on the County’s YouTube channel. The program also airs on County Cable Montgomery at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesdays.
