When it comes to opening a business or promoting an event, signage is important for attracting customers, visibility, and wayfinding. The Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services (DPS) has released a new podcast episode, “Sign Permits,” to help business owners and others navigate the permitting process for exterior signs.

The podcast is hosted by DPS Division Chief Gail Lucas and features DPS Plan Reviewer Roger Waterstreet, who reviews sign permit applications to ensure compliance with the Montgomery County Zoning Ordinance’s Sign Regulations (59-6.7).

“This episode takes listeners through the DPS online application process for exterior signs, including freestanding, wall-mounted, and illuminated signs,” said Division Chief Lucas. “Learn what documents are required for review, including elevations, site plans, drawings, photos, landlord approval, and whether an electrical permit is needed.”

The episode covers:

  • The Sign Ordinance.
  • Permanent and temporary signs.
  • Digital signage.
  • Examples of prohibited signs.
  • The importance of knowing your zone.
  • The variance process and the Sign Review Board.

According to Plan Reviewer Waterstreet, it is important to be prepared from the outset of the application process to avoid delays during review. Waterstreet, who has seen many signs throughout his career at DPS, also shares a story about one of the most creative signs he has seen in Montgomery County.

Previous episodes have addressed topics including accessory dwelling units, eSolar, updated building codes, renovations, residential fast-track permits, special event permits, use and occupancy certificates, and vendor licensing.

Residents can subscribe to the DPS podcast on major platforms, including Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify, or watch episodes on the County’s YouTube channel. The program also airs on County Cable Montgomery at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Listeners who have questions or ideas for future DPS Podcast episodes should email dps.podcast@montgomerycountymd.gov.
