Montgomery Planning to hold a series of visioning workshops for the Clarksburg Gateway Sector Plan – MocoFeed

Posted on April 30, 2024

Community members invited to offer ideas for the future of the Clarksburg area during in-person workshops in May and June

Wheaton, Md. – The Montgomery County Planning Department , part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), will hold in-person, collaborative visioning workshops for community members to provide the department with ideas and input for the future of Clarksburg between I-270 and MD 355 and between Little Seneca Creek and Clarksburg Road. Montgomery Planning is continuing its work on the Clarksburg Gateway Sector Plan , a comprehensive set of land use and zoning recommendations for this part of Montgomery County.

Visioning Workshops Schedule

The workshops will be held in-person at Rocky Hill Middle School (22401 Brick Haven Way, Clarksburg, MD, 20871) in the cafeteria from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. RSVPs are encouraged with translation services available upon request with at least 10 business days’ notice on the RSVP form (sign up links below).

The workshops will be held in two phases, with two identical meetings scheduled for each phase. Community members are encouraged to participate in at least one workshop during each phase. Phase One meetings will be open group discussions to gather community preferences and ideas. Phase Two will feature opportunities for the community to react to specific plan concepts and recommendations.

“The team working on the Clarksburg Gateway Sector Plan is excited to continue its interactions and collaborations with residents, property owners, and other interested stakeholders to get their input on the future of their neighborhoods and public places in the area,” said sector plan lead Clark Larson. “The goal of the visioning workshops is to work with the community to develop a framework that will inform the initial short-, medium-, and long-term recommendations for the sector plan. Ultimately, this framework and the recommendations will be presented to the Montgomery County Planning Board for its feedback later this year and to the County Council in the new year to consider approval.”

About the Clarksburg Gateway Sector Plan

The Clarksburg Gateway Sector Plan is an update to the 1994 Clarksburg Master Plan and Hyattstown Special Study Area , which was last revised with the 2011 Clarksburg Master Plan and Hyattstown Special Study Area Limited Amendment and the 2014 10 Mile Creek Area Limited Amendment . The plan area consists of approximately 969 acres and is generally bounded by I-270 to the west, West Old Baltimore Road and the Little Seneca Greenway to the south, Clarksburg Road (MD 121) to the north, and Frederick Road (MD 355) to the east.

The plan will focus on a portion of the 1994 plan’s Transit Corridor District and small parts of a few surrounding areas, including the I-270 corridor—a significant employment resource for the county and the region. By evaluating land use, zoning, transportation, environmental resources, and historic preservation to determine if a new mix of land uses and zoning would be more appropriate for this area, this plan will make recommendations for how best to update the 1994 plan and its 2011 and 2014 amendments, including interchange design, staging of retail development, transportation corridors, and the environment.
