Posted on June 28, 2024

For Immediate Release: Friday, June 28, 2024

Montgomery County residents with combined household incomes of $64,000 or less can now schedule free virtual and in-person tax appointments with the Community Action Agency’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for prior years, amended and current year (2023) returns. VITA services are available by appointment through Thursday, Oct. 24.

The Community Action Agency is part of the County’s Department of Health and Human Services.

“We have made it a priority to help income-eligible residents receive access to free tax preparation services from qualified preparers,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “The VITA program helps residents get tax refunds and credits each year. In 2023 alone, the County’s VITA program completed nearly 2,000 tax returns for residents, creating approximately $7 million in tax savings. I strongly encourage all who qualify to schedule their appointments.”

  • Virtual Appointments : Available Mondays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Schedule by phone at 240-777-1123.
  • In-Person Appointments : Available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Community Action Agency office, 1401 Rockville Pike, Suite 320, Rockville. Schedule by phone at 240-777-1123 or online through the CASHBACK website .

All VITA sites serve taxpayers filing their taxes with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Community Action’s VITA program also can assist those who need help with ITIN applications and renewals. Appointments for ITIN applications and renewals are available on Wednesdays.

In addition to offering free tax support, VITA tax preparers help residents access valuable tax credits, including Federal and State Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC), Child Tax Credits and the County’s Working Families Income Supplement (WFIS). Such tax credits can provide critical support to households.
