Montgomery County Public Libraries to Launch Summer Reading Challenge on Saturday, June 14

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, May 7, 2025

Registration Opens Thursday, May 15 Online and at All Library Branches

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will launch its annual Summer Reading Challenge on Saturday, June 14, inviting children, teens and adults to “Color Our World” through books, music, theater and art. The program will run through Sunday, Aug. 31, offering opportunities for all ages to engage in reading and creative activities that celebrate imagination and self-expression.

This year’s theme, “Color Our World,” emphasizes the transformative power of the arts and storytelling. With engaging programming and meaningful community partnerships, the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge is more than just a reading initiative—it’s a countywide celebration of culture, creativity and connection.

Early registration begins on Thursday, May 15, online and at all MCPL branches.

“Access to education, the arts and cultural opportunities should never depend on income or zip code,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way for kids, teens and adults to stay engaged, be creative and enjoy learning together. I hope everyone in our community will participate. It’s about more than reading—it’s about connection, exploration and ensuring everyone has access to enriching experiences.”

MCPL will host three Summer Reading Challenge kickoff events featuring activities for all ages.

  • Saturday, June 14 , 10 a.m.-2 p.m, Twinbrook Library , 202 Meadow Hall Drive in Rockville.
  • Saturday, June 21 , 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Germantown Library , 19840 Century Boulevard in Germantown.
  • Sunday, June 22 , 2-4 p.m., Chevy Chase Library , 8005 Connecticut Ave. in Chevy Chase.

To participate in the Summer Reading Challenge:

  • Sign up online or at any MCPL branch beginning Thursday, May 15.
  • Start logging books and activities beginning Saturday, June 14.
  • Earn badges and prizes while exploring reading, art, music and more.

Children ages 0–12 can earn digital badges by completing themed reading activities that highlight local arts organizations. Each badge represents a different community arts partner and is unlocked by engaging in fun, age-appropriate literacy tasks. As children read and explore, they build connections to Montgomery County’s vibrant arts scene while developing early literacy skills.

Teens (ages 13-17) can log reading books and complete creative activities to earn exclusive prizes and recognition for their achievements.
