For Immediate Release: Wednesday, December 11, 2024
Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL), in collaboration with the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Washington Wizards and Friends of the Library Montgomery County ( FOLMC ), invites readers up to age 18 to participate in the 2025 Winter Reading Challenge, which will run from Saturday, Dec. 21 through Sunday, March 16, 2025. This year’s theme, “Active Bodies, Active Minds,” encourages participants to embrace reading and physical activity, providing a fun and healthy way to begin the New Year.
“I am glad that our libraries have teamed up with the Washington Wizards and the Friends of the Library for another year of the successful Winter Reading Challenge,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “This program is a great way to inspire our young residents to stay active and engaged, both physically and mentally, while encouraging healthy habits and a love of learning. I hope families across the County will take advantage of this opportunity to connect, grow and enjoy.”
The Winter Reading Challenge is open to children from birth to 18 years old. It emphasizes fostering healthy habits and a lifelong love of reading. Participants will receive a bingo gameboard to track their reading and activity progress, earning exciting rewards and incentives throughout the challenge.
Participants will receive a paper gameboard and a voucher for a free book, courtesy of FOLMC. As they complete their bingo gameboard, they will earn prizes such as swag packs, medals, branded items and chances to win grand prizes like a basket of goodies or tickets to a Washington Wizards game.
MCPL also will host a Winter Reading Marathon for adults aged 19 and older. During the challenge, adults are encouraged to read for 26.2 hours. Those who complete the marathon will receive a car magnet celebrating their achievement and a chance to win a prize basket.
Participants of all ages can track their process through the READsquared platform, which makes it easy to stay on track with reading and activity goals.
