Montgomery County Police – Holiday Alcohol Task Force Arrests Seventy-Three Impaired Drivers

For Immediate Release: Friday, December 6, 2024

Gaithersburg, MD – Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Holiday Alcohol Task Force have arrested 73 impaired drivers since the start of the task force on November 20, 2024.

On Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1, 2024, officers handled three incidents that led to the arrest of three impaired drivers.

At approximately 12:09 a.m., task force officers pulled over an impaired driver in the area of South Summit Avenue and East Diamond Avenue in Gaithersburg. The 34-year-old female driver performed poorly on the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was placed under arrest.

A search of her bag revealed a loaded Smith and Wesson Equalizer M&P handgun. Further investigation determined that the driver had a valid concealed carry permit through Maryland, but the firearm was seized because she was driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The driver was charged with DUI related charges as well as firearm violations.

At approximately 12:32 a.m. on Sunday, December 1, task force officers approached a vehicle stopped at the flashing yellow traffic signal on Cherry Hill Road at Prosperity Drive in Calverton. Shortly after, the vehicle drifted backwards and struck a police cruiser. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and determined the driver to be under the influence of alcohol. The 48-year-old male driver was arrested and charged with DUI and traffic violations.

At approximately 8:28 p.m., officers were dispatched to the to the area of Connecticut Avenue and Randolph Road in Wheaton for a traffic collision.

A 17-year-old male drove through a red light and struck a vehicle at the intersection. The passengers in the victim’s vehicle were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. The DUI investigation revealed that the teenage driver was under the influence of alcohol. He was placed under arrest, charged with DUI and released to his parents.

**It should be noted that the above arrests include only those arrests made by task force officers and do not include the additional arrests made by patrol officers in the performance of their duties. Therefore, the overall number of DUI arrests made by officers during this period is higher. **
