Montgomery County Health Officials Alert Residents Who May Have Had Contact with Rabid Coyote in the Ashton and Burtonsville Area

For Immediate Release: Friday, March 29, 2024

A coyote who attacked two people on Thursday, March 28 in the Ashton and Burtonsville area has tested positive for rabies. The animal was captured and killed yesterday. If left untreated, rabies is fatal in humans.

County health officials ask anyone who may have had contact with the coyote to check with their primary care physician to discuss the type of contact and any further actions or treatments that may be needed. If an individual does not have a primary care physician, please call the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Disease Control Program at 240-777-1755.

If an individual’s pet had contact with the rabid animal, please call the Office of Animal Services at 240-773-5900. Pet owners should ensure that their pet is up to date on their vaccinations. Call your veterinarian for specific questions about your pet.
