The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) in Derwood will participate in NBCUniversal Local’s 2026 “Clear the Shelters” pet adoption campaign by waiving all adoption fees on Saturday Aug. 1. Last year, more than 100 pets found homes during MCASAC’s “Clear the Shelters” event.
The Animal Services and Adoption Center, located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Rd. in Derwood, will open at 11 a.m. for the event. Adoptions will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Clear The Shelters is always an exciting time of year, and we love seeing all of the empty kennels afterward,” said Adoption Supervisor Faith Koleszar. “We have so many wonderful pets looking for new homes.”
Residents interested in adopting a pet are encouraged to review the adoption process and browse available animals on the Animal Services and Adoption Center section of the Montgomery County Government website before visiting the shelter. Same-day adoptions will be available for approved adopters.

Those planning to adopt should bring:
- A leash and collar for dogs.
- A carrier for cats or small animals.
To help as many pets as possible find homes, animals will not be placed on hold.
MCASAC is operated by the Montgomery County Office of Animal Services and is the County’s only open-admission municipal animal shelter. Through adoptions, education, outreach, and animal protection services, MCASAC promotes responsible pet ownership and serves as a critical community resource. Animal Services officers are available 24 hours per day, seven days a week, to investigate complaints and respond to animal emergencies.
