The latest episode of the “Spirited Discussions” podcast from Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) explores how changes in consumer habits and the marketplace are reshaping the spirits industry.

The episode, titled “Navigating Change in the Spirits Industry,” features ABS Director Kathie Durbin and Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) President and CEO Chris Swonger, who join podcast host Jocelyn Rawat to discuss trends affecting the beverage alcohol industry.
The conversation examines how consumer preferences, global trade, and local policies affect product selection, pricing, and availability. The episode also highlights trends such as declining overall alcohol consumption and growing interest in flavor exploration, moderation, and convenience.
National surveys indicate fewer adults are drinking alcohol, but the market continues to diversify. Consumers increasingly are choosing a “drink better, not more” approach, seeking premium products as well as low- and no-alcohol options. Ready-to-drink beverages continue to grow in popularity because of their convenience, consistent quality, and portability. In 2025, ABS expanded access to spirits-based ready-to-drink products, giving approximately 400 independent beer and wine stores in Montgomery County the opportunity to sell them.
“Although the alcohol industry is experiencing a bit of a reset right now, one thing isn’t going to change,” said Durbin. “People will continue to celebrate milestones and spend time with family and friends. It just might look different with innovative products, convenient packaging, and an eye toward affordable luxuries.”
Revenue from alcohol sales in Montgomery County supports a variety of County services, including libraries, transportation, and parks. When residents purchase alcohol from an ABS retail store or any licensed establishment in the County, those purchases help support community services.
