MCPS Staff Provided Update on Secondary Program Analysis and Regions Model

Today, MCPS presented an update to the Board of Education about the work on the Secondary Academic Programs Analysis, a plan focused on adding opportunities, not taking any away. This initiative represents a fundamental shift toward equity: ensuring every student, regardless of zip code, has genuine access to rigorous and engaging programs.

How This Comes Together: A Region 4 Example
Today’s Board presentation showed how this work comes together through a detailed look at Region 4. This example reflects updated and improved models shaped by feedback, we are building on lessons learned and system assets, not starting from scratch. The presentation revealed program details that reflect where we are today and where we are headed with planning.

The Region 4 presentation included:

• Review of program pathways across four schools—Richard Montgomery, Rockville, Churchill, and Wootton—featuring International Baccalaureate, biomedical science and healthcare, performing arts, STEM and humanities with world languages
• Discussion of course sequences and co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities for each pathway
• Metrics for measuring program quality, student outcomes and equity in implementation
• Sample budget projections showing personnel, materials and professional learning investments for Year 1 implementation
• Sample cost structures to ensure transportation that supports regional program access.

This is an interactive process and we’ll keep you informed along the way following this timeline:

• October: Community engagement and informational sessions
• November: Stakeholder feedback and finalization of the program plan
• January: Superintendent recommendation to the Board
• March: Board vote on the plan
• Fall 2026: Outreach season begins for first classes
