MCPS – CODE YELLOW – 2 HOUR DELAYED OPENING

MCPS – CODE YELLOW – 2 HOUR DELAYED OPENING

February 22, 2026

CODE YELLOW – 2-HOUR DELAYED OPENING – MONDAY FEB. 23, 2026

Here we go again!
As snow begins to fall in many areas of Montgomery County, temperatures are a bit warmer than last time. That said, we are seeing a little snow and slush on roads and sidewalks in some areas of the county – this will make the morning commute more difficult than normal. We don’t expect much that could impact operations south and west of I-495, but we do expect dangerous conditions in much of the rest of the county.

As a reminder, your street may be clear; however, the critical staff necessary to operate your child’s school may be in an area significantly more impacted than where you live. If the staff can’t get there, there is no school.

Fortunately, we also don’t expect the outcome of this storm to stick around very long.

So, to make sure students and staff can travel safely, we are implementing a CODE YELLOW — DELAYED OPENING for Monday, February 23 until further notice (we will re-evaluate early tomorrow morning). Just in case, please plan ahead for the potential of a closure.

What this means (as of right now):

  • Schools and offices will open two hours late.
  • Emergency personnel report as directed.
  • Morning bus routes will operate on a two-hour delay.
  • All field trips and activities beginning at 10:30 a.m. or earlier are canceled, including programs at Thomas Edison High School of Technology.
  • Infant & Toddler appointments before 10 a.m. are canceled; 10 a.m. or later will proceed as scheduled.
  • Morning PreK/Head Start and AM PreK Special Education programs are canceled.
  • Childcare programs (morning, all-day, and after-school) may operate as scheduled; families should contact their provider for more information.
  • Afternoon PreK/Head Start and PM PreK Special Education programs will begin at their regular time.
  • Schools will dismiss at their normal time.
  • Community Use programs will occur as scheduled.

How you can help: To help crews clear roads and school grounds quickly and make travel safer for everyone, please move vehicles from school parking lots and shovel sidewalks near your home. Montgomery County Government also asks residents to park on the even-numbered side of the street so snow plows can pass more easily. All public county garages are free on Sunday and parking enforcement will not begin until after 12 noon on Monday. In the event that this storm produces more than expected, please also contact the county’s 311 service to report areas that need clearing.

Tomorrow morning: Please allow extra time for travel, use caution and stay safe. Student drivers should exercise additional caution.

If conditions warrant a change in this decision, we will send that message by 5 am on Monday morning.
