Joint Press Release / City of Rockville and MCPS: Update: One Student Injured, Suspect in Custody Following Shooting at Wootton High School

February 9, 2026

A suspect is in custody and police are investigating after a student was injured in a shooting Monday afternoon at Thomas S. Wootton High School.

A Wootton High School student, age 16, was injured. The suspected shooter, a 16-year-old Wootton High School student, is in custody.

The response was a combined effort of the Rockville City Police Department, Montgomery County Police, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and .

At approximately 2:15 p.m., Montgomery County Police Department 1st District officers and Rockville City Police Department officers were dispatched to the school for a reported shooting.

The first arriving officers located the victim in a hallway inside the school.

The student victim was found with one gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital and is in stable condition.

The suspect was quickly identified. He was arrested a short time later near the school. At this time, there is no further threat to public safety.

Students were held in lockdown as a precaution. The reunification location for all students is Robert Frost Middle School, 9201 Scott Drive.

Parents should not come to Wootton High School. Community members are advised to avoid the area around the school, which remains an active crime scene.

confirmed that Wootton High School will open on time on Tuesday.
