Honoring Our Best, Building What’s Next: A New Vision for Program Excellence and Equity in MCPS

Posted on September 4, 2025

MCPS is proposing a transformative new model for our local and regional programs, launching in the 2027-2028 school year. This vision marks a fundamental shift from a model of scarcity to one of abundance, ensuring all students have direct access to the outstanding opportunities they deserve.

Our goal is clear: Maintain what works, and build a more equitable and accessible future for all.

1. Your Child’s Future Will Not Be Determined by Their Zip Code

We are breaking down barriers to success. Our new vision ensures that every student, in every neighborhood, has access to our very best programs and opportunities. We are committed to a future where your child’s potential is the only thing that determines their path forward.

2. More Opportunities Closer to Home

We are expanding our high-interest and high-impact programs, like the advanced STEM pathways and high-demand career readiness programs to more schools across the county. This means more seats, shorter waitlists and less travel time for your child to access the specialized education they are passionate about.

3. Strengthening Excellence in Every Neighborhood School

We are investing in the unique strengths of every local school. From dual enrollment and AP/IB courses to career-focused internships and industry credentials, we are ensuring that your neighborhood school is a place where your child can thrive and build a foundation for a successful future.

4. Preserving and Growing Premier Programs

Our most sought-after themed programs such as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, the Science, Math and Computer Science program, Humanities, and various career and technical education programs will not only continue to thrive at their host sites, but will also expand to other regions. This preserves their unique culture while serving a greater number of students.

This plan will be executed with continuous monitoring and targeted support, measured by a rigorous evaluation of student outcomes. It makes operations more efficient and ensures every dollar is spent directly to support student success. By focusing the strategy, MCPS will unlock the immense potential within its schools and build a brighter, more equitable future for all students.
