Guiding Students Beyond the Bell: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

At A. Mario Loiederman Middle School, Ramon Pazmino is redefining what after-school programs can mean for Latino students.

As director of the Excel Beyond the Bell initiative, Pazmino is helping students see that this space is more than just a place to catch up on homework; it’s a focus for pride, identity and opportunity.

Now in his second year leading the program, the second-generation Latin American is making it his mission to offer a haven where students can escape life’s pressures, discover their strengths and be themselves.

“I think being a Latino means being proud of who you are,” Pazmino said.

Excel Beyond the Bell has served more than 1,900 middle-school students through 140 programs, according to its website.

“I believe after school is a place where students can take a break from whatever they’re going through and focus on positive things instead of negativity,” said Pazmino.”

During his five years with MCPS, Pazmino, who is also a paraeducator at Loiederman, says his work has also helped him reconnect with his roots.

“Working here has helped me feel more integrated with my culture,” Pazmino said. “Students show me new music, introduce me to foods from where they’re from and share their experiences.”

It’s this connection that he brings to every aspect of his work, including leading his students to a championship win this year in Soccer4Change, a program under Excel Beyond the Bell focused on removing barriers and building life skills through the sport.

“I think that having students play a sport as big as soccer is a gateway to many possibilities: freedom, fun and potentially a big future.”

Megan McLaughlin, principal of A. Mario Loiederman Middle School says Pazmino’s dedication and leadership make him an exceptional role model.

“He is always available, offering a calm and supportive presence and consistently encourages students to challenge themselves and grow,” said McLaughlin. “His leadership made him the natural choice to coach our Soccer4Change program.”

Pazmino embraces the opportunity to “be a positive impact on students’ lives.”
