Walter Johnson High School welcomed about 150 senior citizens for a Thanksgiving feast on Nov. 20. This was the 47th year that the school has hosted the Senior Citizens Luncheon, which came complete with traditional roast turkey and all the trimmings. The event also featured music, dancing and fellowship. The guests hailed from several senior citizens’ centers, community centers in Montgomery County and individual sign ups.

“The food is good, but this is what I’m here for,” said Jean, motioning to the students at her table. “I enjoy being around the kids. They have so much enthusiasm and it’s nice talking to them about what they’re going to do in life.”

Shelley Honickman, who’s been to the luncheon four or five times, agreed. “The students are so friendly and open to conversation. It’s very nice.”

The event was planned by the Key Club, with coordination and hosting help from other student groups, especially Sophie Fierst’s Leadership Class. With help from the Division of Food and Nutrition Services, cafeteria staff prepared the meal. Student volunteers served the food, mingled with their guests and later, twirled them around the cafeteria dance floor. The school’s jazz ensemble played throughout the luncheon. The show choir, advanced choir and Madrigals also performed. Table decorations were designed and made by the Leadership and Child Development classes.

Walter Johnson student Jocelyn Riad, who has volunteered at senior centers, was volunteering at the luncheon for the first time.

“I thought it would be a neat thing to do,” she said. “It’s been fun.”
