Eighteen-Year-Old Arrested in Briggs Chaney Road Homicide

For Immediate Release: Friday, January 23, 2026

Gaithersburg, MD – An 18-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of a Beltsville man in Silver Spring.

Montgomery County Police officers assigned to the U.S. Marshals Task Force took Yoel Christ Tie into custody on Thursday, January 22, 2026. Tie was identified as a suspect in January 8, 2026, homicide in the 3000 block of Briggs Chaney Road.

At approximately 7:45 p.m. on January 8, 3rd District officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded to the 3000 block of Briggs Chaney Road for the report of a shooting. Officers located 43-year-old Gavin St. Aubyn Boothe in the roadway suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives with the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division obtained surveillance video showing the victim, Boothe, exchanging words with two unknown males. Shortly after, Boothe was shot.

The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Boothe died from multiple gunshot wounds and ruled the death a homicide.

Through the course of the investigation, detectives identified Tie as one of the suspects captured on surveillance video. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant on January 22, charging Tie with second-degree murder and felony use of a firearm during a violent crime. Tie was arrested at his Gaithersburg apartment later the same day.
