Posted on July 2, 2024

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, July 2, 2024

From the Office of Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles

Montgomery County At-Large Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles invites East County and Upcounty residents to attend the first two events in her series of Community Conversations next week. The first meeting will take place on Monday, July 8, from 6-8 p.m. at the East County Regional Services Center, 3300 Briggs Chaney Rd. in Silver Spring. The second meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 9, from 6-8 p.m. at the Upcounty Regional Services Center, 12900 Middlebrook Rd. in Germantown .

“Building safe, vibrant and resilient communities requires strategic investment in the holistic development of youth, nurturing mental health and fostering economic opportunities,” said Ruben Rosario, director of the Upcounty Regional Service Center. “Our commitment is to doing just that through intentional, meaningful dialogue with the diverse communities we serve.”

These upcoming Community Conversation series are a unique opportunity to unite local business owners, County and public safety officials, nonprofit partners, residents and stakeholders from across the County.

“The East County Regional Office applauds our County investments and collaborative partnerships in the positive youth development space to help young people, particularly those from low income and marginalized communities to get ready, thrive and be well prepared for a healthy, safe and productive adulthood,” said Jewru Bandeh, director of the East County Regional Services Center. “We need to work harder and invest more in promoting positive youth development now in order to make the necessary impacts for the young in critical life changing areas such as education, physical and mental health, job readiness, family and community belonging and stability.”

At these events, we will discuss the current state of Montgomery County’s services, resources, and opportunities and seek your input on how to advance this work in the next budget year.

“The police department has a responsibility to deter crime and the fear of crime in our communities. However, in order to accomplish this mission, one of the most important things we must do is participate in meaningful community engagement with our youth,” stated Captain David McBain, commander of the 3rd District Police Station.
