Driver Arrested in Briggs Chaney Road Fatal Collision

For Immediate Release: Monday, December 2, 2024

Gaithersburg, MD — Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) have arrested and charged 27-year-old Jovannie T. McCarthy with a fatal collision that occurred on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

At approximately 12:44 a.m., a blue 2006 Honda Accord was exiting westbound MD 200 onto Briggs Chaney Road when it crossed the westbound and eastbound lanes and struck a 2023 Volkswagen that was traveling eastbound on Briggs Chaney Road.

The adult female passenger of the Volkswagen was transported to an area hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The decedent has been identified as 35-year-old Kiara Cheeks, of Washington, D.C.

The driver of the Honda was identified as Jovannie T. McCarthy, of Silver Spring.

On Sunday, December 1, 2024, McCarthy was taken into custody on the strength of an arrest warrant where she was charged with criminally negligent manslaughter by vehicle. The rest of the charges will not be included in the warrant as they are underlying offenses.

McCarthy has been transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where she is being held without bond pending a 1 p.m. bond review today.
