Montgomery County Council President Natali Fani-González issued a statement following the Economic Development (ECON) Committee’s recommendation to move forward with an 18-month moratorium on data centers and the Planning, Housing and Parks (PHP) Committee’s review and vote on the amended Data Center Zoning Text Amendment (ZTA) 26-01:
“Today, Montgomery County Council Committees took important action on data center development in the County. First, the Economic Development Committee voted to recommend an 18-month moratorium on data center development in the County. I appreciate the collaboration of my colleagues to find middle ground that will put us on a productive path forward.

“Then, the Planning, Housing and Parks Committee reviewed and voted on amended ZTA 26-01 with a sole focus on defining large data centers and prohibiting them throughout the County. The purpose of the amended zoning measure – together with the 18-month moratorium on permits for large data centers – is to allow the necessary time for the Council to deliberate on appropriate guardrails for large data centers in the County, and do so in collaboration with the state. Indeed, I believe that regulatory certainty is necessary now so all stakeholders can clearly understand the rules of the road as we work out the comprehensive approach for data centers in the Montgomery County.
“The full Council will take final action on the moratorium and ZTA on Tuesday, July 28.”
