Council Passes Resolution Uplifting Fair Housing Month and Affirming Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
For Immediate Release: Tuesday, April 1, 2025
From the Office of Councilmember Evan Glass
The resolution solidifies the Council’s commitment to advancing policies that promote racial equity in housing, education and economic opportunity
The Montgomery County Council unanimously approved a resolution today that strengthens the County’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The resolution was introduced by Councilmember Evan Glass in honor of Fair Housing Month to promote inclusivity and equitable opportunity for everyone to live and work in Montgomery County.
“At a time when national forces are trying to divide communities based on race, gender and immigration status, Montgomery County remains committed to supporting our beautiful diversity through equitable and inclusive policies,” said Councilmember Glass. “The reason Montgomery County is home to four of the ten most diverse places in the United States is because we welcome people from all around the world, regardless of their skin color, where they pray, who they love or how they identify. These are the Montgomery County values that we must continue fighting for.”
The resolution also acknowledges the County’s history of racially restrictive housing covenants and cites the need to proactively eliminate structural and institutional barriers to housing opportunities. Though outlawed by the Fair Housing Act of 1968, these policies have left a lasting impact on housing accessibility and economic disparities.
The Mapping Segregation Project, led by the Montgomery County Planning Department, provides a valuable tool for residents to learn about the local history of racial housing covenants and other discriminatory housing practices. Residents can utilize the Project’s database to better understand historical segregation patterns and redress past injustices by modifying racially restrictive language in their deeds at no cost through the State of Maryland’s legal process.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of “race, color, religion, or national origin in the sale or rental of housing,” and was later amended to include discrimination based on sex, physical and mental disability, and familial status.
