Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Thursday, December 18, 2025. The collision resulted in the death of 76-year-old Robert Sheldon Boethling, of Silver Spring.  

At approximately 2 p.m., 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service personnel were dispatched to the 15200 block of New Hampshire Ave. for the report of a collision involving a red 2012 Toyota RAV4 and a cyclist.

The initial investigation has revealed that Boethling was riding a bicycle on the right shoulder of northbound New Hampshire Ave. The driver of the Toyota was driving northbound on New Hampshire Ave. For Reasons that are still under investigation, the driver of the Toyota struck the cyclist on the shoulder.

Boethling was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
