Celebrate Active Aging Week with Free Activities at the Senior Center – Mocofeed

Stay healthy, informed and entertained with seminars and events from the Rockville Senior Center in October.

Montgomery County observes Active Aging Week in early October with free programs and events that promote healthy physical, mental and intellectual lifestyles. The Rockville Senior Center will host three events during the week to help prevent falls, make connections and learn self-defense. 

The Serpent's Rise by L.M. Sypher — one-year anniversary book sale, 9.20.26–9.26.26. Jorden Casillas and the Age of Monsters, a mythological adventure series for young adult readers, ages 10+.

Learn practical home safety strategies and simple exercises that can help improve strength, balance and confidence. The presentation will offer tips for reducing fall risks and maintaining independence. 

Register with course #42381. 10-11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5. Free. 

A relaxed morning of coffee, light breakfast and meeting fellow senior center members to share ideas and spark conversation. 

Register with course #41181. 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7. Free. 

Small-group training in self-defense techniques for a full-body workout that improves strength. 

Register with course #42377. 1-2:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. Free. 

Join representatives from the nonprofit Ashiyanaa to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights. Learn about Diwali’s traditions and Ashiyanaa’s programs, sample traditional festive food and play Diwali-themed bingo. 

No prior knowledge of Diwali needed. 

Register with course #42527. 10-11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19. Free. 

Krishna Kumar, author of “Loneliness in Later Life: Causes, Consequences, and a Path to Connection,” will discuss 10 things to know about loneliness.

Following the presentation, Kumar will be available to sign books, and attendees may take home a signed copy.

Learn simple ways to protect yourself from Medicare fraud and scams while playing bingo. The program will also cover Medicare benefits and practical ways to keep personal information safe. Prizes and light refreshments will be available.

Volunteer to help neighbors with snow removal this winter. 

Many seniors and individuals with disabilities depend on the help of volunteers to get through the winter weather.
