Albert Einstein High School recently celebrated the 20th anniversary years of its Japanese language and cultural program with a special Sakura tree planting ceremony.
Donated by All Nippon Airways through the National Cherry Blossom Festival Tree Planting Program, the school received six new cherry blossom trees as a living symbol of the enduring friendship between the United States and Japan.
The event, emceed by Japanese teacher I-Jiun (Julie) Liu, brought together distinguished guests from National Cherry Blossom Festival, All Nippon Airways, the Embassy of Japan, students, families and staff to honor the deepening cultural connections within the school community.
The highlight of the ceremony was the student performance of Ue Wo Muite Arukou, known internationally as “Sukiyaki.” The performance featured student instrumentalists, vocalists and the Titanes Salseros dance team. This unique collaboration showcased the spirit of cultural exchange, blending Japanese melody with Latin rhythm to symbolize unity through art.
All students in the Japanese program contributed to the celebration, from folding delicate sakura origami to hand-painting canvases that were gifted to honored guests.
Einstein has the second oldest Japanese language program in MCPS, offering students opportunities to explore language, history and culture through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
