Free Summer Meals Begin June 23 at More Than 100 MCPS Sites

Thousands of Montgomery County children will receive free, nutritious meals as part of the MCPS Summer Food Service Program.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the MCPS Summer Food Service Program was created in 1976 to bridge the summer break nutrition gap by providing nutritious meals at no cost to children 18 years of age and under, and to people with disabilities who are over 18 years old. 

Approximately 45 percent of children in MCPS are eligible for Free and Reduced-price Meals during the school year.

This summer, MCPS anticipates that over 12,000 students will receive meals at more than 100 sites. Staff from the MCPS Department of Food and Nutrition Services prepare and deliver food to all of the program sites in the county. Last summer, the program provided more than 500,000 meals to students throughout the county.

In addition, Maryland SUN Bucks helps families with school-aged children with a $120 grocery benefit for each eligible child during the summer break. SUN Bucks is designed to work together with other benefits families may already receive, such as SNAP and WIC. Children can receive MCPS summer meals and SUN Bucks.
