Bicycle Safety

May is National Bike Month and with longer days and warmer weather, May is also the time of the annual National Bike to Work Week, which is May 11 – 17, 2026.

Helmets are a critical part of protecting yourself while riding a bicycle or anything with wheels such as a skateboard, moped, or motorcycle. In addition, understanding local laws regarding safe bicycle riding is important.

In Maryland, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists! Riding a bicycle on sidewalks is determined by local ordinance. For example, in the City of Rockville and most of Montgomery County, bicycles are permitted on sidewalks, but in the City of Gaithersburg and in Prince George’s County, they are not.

To further protect yourself and your family, here are a few more tips:

• Montgomery County law requires that children 18 years old and younger wear a helmet while riding or being carried on a bicycle, including those with training wheels.
• To be detected by motorists, bicycles must be equipped with a red reflector in the rear, a white reflector to the front, a bell or other noise-producing device (excluding sirens or whistles), as well as a braking device. Further, your tires should be properly inflated.
• Avoid riding a bicycle at night. If you must, the law requires a white headlight on the front and a red light on the back.
• A bicycle may not carry any passenger unless it is designed for and equipped with a seat for that passenger.
• Keep a safe distance of at least three feet from other vehicles when on the street.
• Bicyclists must obey all traffic lights and signs when riding on streets, ride with traffic, use hand signals before turning, yield the right of way to pedestrians, and can only ride on streets where the posted speed limit is under 50 mph.
