The featured guests on this week’s edition of En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council) will include Carlos Cortes, public information officer and police officer at the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD); and Mariela Leon, Hispanic community liaison for MCPD. The show will air on Friday, May 8 at 2 p.m. on Radio America (WILC 900AM) and is streamed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music.
The program will center on public safety and the ongoing efforts by MCPD to protect the wellbeing of County residents. It will open with a conversation with Officer Cortes, who will share practical, real-life guidance on how to recognize and prevent distraction thefts, crimes that often target older adults. This segment will cover common tactics used by perpetrators, warning signs to watch for, and simple but effective steps residents can take to protect themselves and their loved ones.
The show will conclude with a segment on sexual abuse prevention, emphasizing the importance of breaking stigma and normalizing open, age-appropriate conversations within families and communities. As part of this effort, MCPD will host its second community workshop, led by Mariela Leon. The session will focus on prevention strategies, understanding and establishing healthy boundaries, recognizing warning signs, and empowering individuals to speak up and seek help.
The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express their views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station.
Each week, the show features host Marcela Rodriguez, Council program manager and public information officer, and guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
