Letter from Thomas W. Wootton High School to Families / Tuesday, February 10

February 10, 2026

The following letter from Dr. Joseph Bostic was sent to families, providing guidance to begin Tuesday following Monday’s events.  The school will have mental health and counseling support for students and staff throughout the day.

Dear Wootton Students, Staff, Families, and Community,

In the wake of recent events, I am reminded once again of the incredible heart of this community. In moments of crisis, the impact of school violence extends far beyond the physical; it ripples through the emotional and psychological well-being of every student, staff member, and family. It creates a weight that can feel overwhelming, creating new trauma as well as resurfacing past traumas and shaking our foundational sense of security.

The true measure of a community is how it responds to that weight. Our goal is to prioritize open communication, leaning on available mental health resources, and maintaining a culture of vigilance and care. We acknowledge the pain, but we do not let it define our future. Together, we remain committed to ensuring our schools are sanctuaries for learning, growth, and safety.

While moments like these can feel heavy, please know that you do not carry that weight alone. We are One Wootton, and we will get through this exactly how we always do: together. I assure you that your safety and well-being remain my highest priorities. I am in communication and active partnership with MCPS central services staff and local officials as we navigate our next steps. We are working diligently to ensure that each student, staff member, and family member feels supported, heard, and secure.
